About this bike
My name is Noca. I’m from Portugal and this is my first single speed built.
Frame: Columbus cromolly doppio spessore
Fork: Columbus cromolly
Front wheel: Mavic Aksium Race
Rear wheel: Mavic Aksium Race
Chainring: Shimano Deore-XT 44T (from 2000)
Crankset: Shimano Deore-XT 170mm
Chain tensioner: Point racing
Cog: Shimano Deore-XT 13T
Brake/lever: Miche/Primo BMX brake-lever
Handlebars: ITM classic (first time I cutted a handlebar)
Stem: PRO 80mm
Saddle: BBB cromo white
Now the history of the bike: I’m a BTT freak. Recently I found (internet) all the “single speed and fixies fever”. I’m a graphic designer and that subject is very common in all those “graphic sites” (like ffffound). Here in Portugal it’s very rare to see a single speed road bike. All the people I said that I was going to built one called me crazy. Well, that helped me to want one even more. I bought a road cromoly frame (columbus tubes) and cutted all the cable suports (for brakes and gears). Than I started to think about the name of the bike. It’s a “bullhorn bike” so I dicided to call it “before the bullfight” (it’s ONLY the name of my fav SONG. I’m a huge lover of David Sylvian’s music.). Recently i did a logo for a brand called BOLD. This bike is kinda a surprise for them (that’s why “concept by noca for bold” and the “B”).
Maybe some of you guys are wandering about the 44t x 13T ratio I use… I live in Aveiro (Portugal). That’s a town without hills. I love to ride the bike with this ratio but I’m already building a new single speed bike and i think i’m going to put a more “kind ratio” for my legs.
I’m addited to this now! Alot of people came to me and asked me about this “strange bike” (must remind you all that here in Portugal it’s very rare to see a single speed or fixed bike). I’m already making a new one. Than I’ll share it too here.
wonderful!
thanks Corrado!
I felt like a kid again while i was building it. Now i’m starting a new one. I think i became addited :)
Love the colour scheme and the wheels look hot on there too.
thanks Chris!
your use of “scheme” word in your comment made me smile alot. That explains perfectly what I wanted to achieve with it. Thanks for that!
i really love your bike :) do u build professionally?
Hi!
I’m glad you like it ;)
No, I’m not a professional bike builder. I’m only a guy who loves to personalize his things.
I also have now a BTT cannondale personalized. Alot of people asked me if i want to sell it but…
Right now I’m addicted to “road single speed bikes”. I spent my holidays building the “before the bullfight”. Right now I’m starting a new one. A friend of mine (portuguese guy) who lives there in London saw this bike and asked me to built one for him.
Since i posted the “before the bullfight” here i recieved some emails of people asking me if i want to sell it.
Right now I’m starting to think about building some bikes. The only thing I know (for sure) is that I will never build 2 equal bikes. I will talk with the person interested. I have to know a little bit the person who will own the bike. For exemple, the “before the bullfight” was made for me. All my friends told me “wow! your bike is you”. I know it’s much easier for me to built one for me but I like the ideia of “concept by noca to bike.uk” (for exemple. Eh eh! who knows?)
thanks again for your comment!
Really nice bike noca.
Thinking on building my own singlespeed after seeing this one!
Two notes:
- did you build and painted the frame yourself?
- do you consider removing the decals from the wheels?
Congrats!
Hi illarra!
After i built this bike i became addited to it. I’m already working on my second one :)
The frame i used is a road frame i bought (very light one. double buttted columbus cromoly). I had to work alot on it to make it as clean as it is now. I’ve cuted all the frame supports for cables and derailers and than i had to prepare it for the paint job. That was a very slowly process becouse i didn’t want to ruin the frame and make any holes on it. The tubes are very light and also with tiny tube walls.
When i has slowly cutting and rasp the frame i started to draw the decals. The “B” one that’s the logo of a brand called “bold” (i made the logo for that brand. It’s now a bike brand. It’s more like a “cool hunting magazine”... They like to show personal bold projects. I told them that i was preparing a surprise for them and that’s why the “concept by noca for bold”. The “before the bullfight” decal was my final and important personal touch… The owners of “bold” are great friends of mine and they sure know by looking at the bike that it was surely made by me. “Before the Bullfight” is the name of the song of my life (from David Sylvian). I used bullhorns as handlebar so i thought it was funny to call it “before the bullfight”.
I prepared the frame and than i went to a car painter (great friend of mine). He did the last hand (paint) than i carefuly aplied the decals. Than he started to vernish it.
I spent almoust a week only choosing the color of the frame.
I’ve already removed the decals from the wheels and replaced that stem for a cinelli vintage one. Now i can say that the bike is finish.
thanks for your comment! ;)
I’m glad my bike made you decide to built one for you.
but watch out. You might become addicted ;)
ups!
the frame i used… i tried to know the brand of it but the man who sold it didn’t know that info. He bought alot of cromoly frames (imported) but the only thing he knows for sure is that it was made with columbus tubes.
Hi!!!!
I really love your bike! Great colour & lines. Frame is stunning too.
I was wondering how you adapted the rear wheel, 9 or 10 speed, to 1 speed. I’m planning to build a single speed bike and i’ve got a pair of old aksium in my road bike i want to replace and use!
Thanks!
Hi Mauricio!
Thanks for the comment!
It’s easy to use a rear road wheel like a single speed. You must have a singlespeed adapter and depending how the dropouts are a chain tensioner.
you can see it here:

thanks again for your comment
Hi Noca,
Is it possible to share the colour code for your paint? Like it so much and would like to have the same colour as yours, Ta!
hi Reez!
sorry for the delay!
Well, i did the colour by mixing (sometimes only a few drops) other colours and testing it… I can’t repeat it
But i think you can get a similar colour if you start with the “bianchi” colour and than add some white. You will not get the same colour but..
Sorry! Wen i paint a frame i never use a standard colour code. I always try to find a unique colour
